The magic of Netflix's Digital Marketing

With more than 5 billion Internet users around the globe, the web has strongly developed in recent years, leading the world towards a digitalisation of the economy. Marketing has been deeply affected by the digital revolution. This led companies to redesign their traditional marketing approaches by using digital media and channels to promote their products and services.

That’s when the concept of digital marketing comes into play. Unlike traditional marketing, digital marketing puts an emphasis on putting the customers at the heart of its strategy by developing a strong relationship through the platforms they engage with. A great example of that is the global leading streaming company, Netflix with their multi-channel approach to digital marketing.

Digital marketing practices that helped Netflix becomes the leading streaming platform

Netflix’s success is not only due to the large catalogue of films and series it offers; but also the way that the company distinguishes itself from its competitors through their innovative and creative digital marketing strategies. To maintain and retain customers, Netflix implemented three main digital marketing principles.

  • Email Direct Marketing : Netflix puts an emphasis on personalising their content for each customer - they invest time in building creative and engaging email marketing campaigns. Customers receive recommendations and updates on the upcoming shows and films on the platform.

  • SEO : The streaming company also uses search engine optimization services in order to grow its brand presence online. By optimising potential keywords Netflix gained global organic leads.

  • Social Media : Netflix is highly present on social media, from Facebook to Instagram and Twitter. The streaming company posts daily teasers and interviews from the actors starring in their upcoming programs. To reinforce their proximity with their consumer, Netflix also shares images, questions, GIFs and funny memes. Netflix’s social media presence dominates the online streaming industry by interacting with people with humour, comebacks and witty replies.

Netflix managed to adapt to the digital revolution by offering personalised content and by promoting their service through multiple channels. Their knowledge of their target audience is one of the main key success factors to capture their audience’s attention. Lastly, Netflix’s authenticity and high presence on social media contributed to take their digital marketing to the next level.
