Social Media Mistakes To Be Mindful Of

Businesses put tremendous effort into marketing strategies to get their brand in front of as many people as possible. The advancement of technology has resulted in social media being one of the most important platforms to leverage. In the complex world of social media, businesses are bound to make mistakes, but social media can be an unforgiving place. Mistakes may come at a high cost, costing companies their reach, engagement, followers, customers, and revenue.

What are some social media mistakes that are you probably making?

We share six common social media mistakes you need to avoid at all costs.

1. Not staying active

Have you ever compared your social media presence to your competitors? The divide is often in marketing efforts. Posting a few pretty pictures or funny videos isn’t going to cut it, especially if your post was from weeks or maybe months ago. An inactive social media account can highlight your business as an option, damage your credibility, confuse customers, and destroy your brand reputation.

2. No marketing strategy

No marketing strategy? Expect Problems.

A marketing strategy is essentially the roadmap that guides you in almost every business decision that you make. It sets out business goals, ideal target customers, develops action plans, minimises risk factors and helps you gain a competitive advantage. Without a marketing strategy, it may lead to the following consequences:

  • Uncoordinated promotion strategies
  • Losing out to competitors
  • Missed out on business growth opportunities
  • Risk of losing customers.

3. Posting the wrong content

Make sure your objective is to create engaging content relevant to your target audience. For example, as a chef, your content should primarily focus on food, cooking tips, recipes and so on. If you start sharing dog videos, you risk the chance of confusing your customers and increasing the likelihood of them unfollowing your page to follow others. This will lead to a decline in followers, engagement, and connecting opportunities.

4. Treating each social media platform, the same

You may think it’s easier to post the same content on all your social account than to plan them individually. But your audiences on Facebook may be different compared to the audiences on Instagram or Twitter. If you want to maximise the growth of your channel, the key is to take a tailored approach; you should think about what your customers are doing and their mindset.

Here’s a summary of the differences between top social platforms:

  • Facebook: Business preferred method of networking, updating company information and sharing employee culture. Places a big emphasis on engagement (comments, shares, messages, and reviews)
  • Twitter: A fast-paced network for businesses to engage in real-time, provide quick feedback and discussion, share opinions, and join trending conversations with relevant hashtags.
  • Instagram: A strong emphasis on high-resolution visuals in an eye-catching way to showcase brand product on stories, people and highlights.
  • LinkedIn: For connecting and building professional relationships with content related to your business (company news, activities, employee updates, milestones, and achievements).

5. Not including call-to-actions (CTA’s)

All the content you create relies on a call to action. If you’re not including a CTA, you might as well forget any revenue, conversion, or profit from happening. A CTA explicitly tells your audience what steps you want them to take next and provides them with the resource needed to take action (email address, link to website, phone number, etc.). An effective CTA grows your audience, creates opportunities for conversion and gives a sense of urgency.
